Layered and Intertwined Design

I'm not sure what the exact design technique is called, but I'm calling it 'Layering and Intertwining' and lately I've really been into it.

Can you see what I'm referring to? In this photo I placed the words 'to come' behind the carnations and then doodled vine elements on the bottom intertwining the pink and green/white vines amongst themselves and the stems of the carnations. Pretty cool, right?!

It's super simple to create this intertwining effect. I used Procreate (LOVE this app!). These are the steps:

  • Import photo (*photo credit Unsplash)

  • Draw Lettering

  • Doodle Vines

  • Erase the parts or the graphic/letters you want layered behind

  • I outlined the carnations as an extra and because I wanted to :)

Easy right?

*Tip - Zooming in and decreasing the opacity of the top layer makes the accuracy of erasing so much easier and creates amazing results!

I hope this inspires you to try out my new obsession of layering and intertwining!

Oh, and by the way, this technique could totally be used in Photoshop as well!

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see a tutorial with screenshots.
