His Style
Early Work
Due to a suicide of a close friend, Picasso suffered a bout of depression. During this time of depression, Picasso painted monochromatic blue with destitute subject matter like prostitutes, beggars, and drunks. This time was considered Picasso’s Blue Period (1901-1904).
Following Picasso's blue period was the Rose Period (1904-1906). He switched from using blues to pink/rose color during this time. This was the beginning of the prolonged process out of his depression.
From 1906 - 1909 was his African Period, where Picasso used inspiration from African Art/masks in his work.
Cubism
Picasso, along with Georges Braque, started the Cubism Art Movement. This art style is what Picasso is most famous for.
Cubism resulted from the rapidly changing world of 1910, where photography and cameras were replacing the need of an artist. Cubism shook things up, creating different and unique angles of the subject on one visual plane.
Its fragmented shapes identify cubism with various views that overlap each other.
There are two Cubism Movements.
Analytical Cubism - where the subject has some identifiable characteristics and a muted monotone color palette is usually used.
Synthetic Cubism - incorporated collage to add more variety with colors and textures.
